JVC’s exclusive 3-chip D-ILA technology brings high definition pictures of professional quality to consumer televisions
D-ILA (Direct drive Image Light Amplifier)
What makes microdisplay devices unique from conventional rear projection televisions (RPTVs) is that they integrate digital microchips and utilize light projection technology rather than CRT technology. The most common types of microdisplay devices are Liquid Crystal Display devices (LCDs), Digital Micro-mirror devices (DMD or DLP), and Liquid Crystal on Silicon devices (LCOS).
HD-ILA employs D-ILA, a reflective technology that offers the highest levels of brightness available today. And devices equipped with D-ILA have sophisticated LCOS pixels that require virtually no space between each pixel. This means that D-ILA yields the highest aperture ratio (reflective area) and maximizes the total area in which mega pixels can be positioned. D-ILA incorporates a single high power user-replaceable lamp, three vertically oriented LCOS microchips (one for each RGB colour), a precision focus lens, and an exclusive PBS (polarized beam splitter) to combine all image colours.
D-ILA microchips also have a unique inorganic alignment layer that provides longer device life and optimum performance in all operating conditions. This helps to ensure that the D-ILA system will consistently produce images superior in resolution, grayscaling, brightness, and colour reproduction which, will not diminish over time to make TV viewing or even video game playing much more enjoyable.
Original HD-ILA Components
High Power User-Replaceable Lamp
The high power user-replaceable lamp that projects light to provide HD-ILA televisions with their exceptionally bright images also boasts a long life span. But most importantly, unlike many other microdisplay types, the user can easily replace the HD-ILA lamp without the need of a service technician. To replace the lamp, simply turn the screw(s) to reveal the lamp housing and just pull the old lamp out.
Custom Designed Lens Assembly
The unique, custom designed lens assembly developed especially for D-ILA devices consists of 11 separate glass components and an aspheric resin coated lens to ensure precise focusing and low distortion at all times, no matter how complicated the scene. Multi-layer anti-reflective coating on each element minimizes internal reflections and allows for crystal-clear, natural image reproduction.
Unique PBS (Polarized Beam Splitter)
Another distinctive advantage that D-ILA offers over other device types is its PBS. After light is reflected off of each colour microchip, it is directed through the PBS that incorporates a truly amazing combination of customized prisms that work together to recreate beautifully, all colours in the spectrum. And because all colours are combined simultaneously, the PBS minimizes any potential loss of contrast to further enhance image uniformity.
Superior Technologies of HD-ILA
"Rainbow Effect" Eliminated
Because JVC employs D-ILA 3-chip LCOS technology, images produced by the HD-ILA are free of the “rainbow effect” that can result from using single chip, colour wheel technology. Colour wheels create images by sending sequential pulses of light that are combined by one’s vision instantaneously so that it is usually not perceptible. But when this becomes perceptible, it appears as a flashing rainbow that can be annoying. However, 3-chip LCOS technology simultaneously reflects light to the PBS to combine colours, making images much more comfortable to view.
“Screen Door Effect” Eliminated
D-ILA technology requires virtually no space between pixels and this helps to eliminate the “screen door effect”, which results in display technologies that have space between pixels for moving parts or transistor wires. The cumulative effect of having this space makes the display screen appear as if images are being viewed through a screen door, hence the name. But because D-ILA technology requires no space between pixels, images are always seamless and exquisite.
